About Us

Investment Criteria

We invest in UK-headquartered businesses valued between £20–150 million, typically deploying equity investments of £20–50 million. We are not sector specific, and target businesses with untapped potential.

We will look at most transaction types with founders, family-run business and corporate vendors including:

  • Management buyouts (MBOs), buy-ins (MBIs), institutional buyouts (IBOs)
  • Transition deals partnering with founders keen to remain involved
  • Corporate carve-outs
  • Companies undergoing transitions, restructurings and special situations

Key criteria of an attractive Rutland deal include:

  • Leading player in an established sector with a resilient market environment
  • Clear opportunity for transformation
  • Complexity and need for change that can be addressed with controllable actions

We actively seek situations where we can bring strategic clarity, capital, and momentum to drive change.

Our Approach

At Rutland, we invest more than capital – we invest in business transformation. Our hands-on, strategic, and collaborative approach enables us to deal with complexity and tackle pressing issues. Whether a business is in transition, facing challenges, or underperforming its potential, we do more than support financially – we partner to drive meaningful change.

Strategic Change and Transformation

Every business is different, however we always develop clear plans tailored for maximum impact enabling business to reach their full potential. We draw on deep experience across sectors and economic cycles and focus on four key areas: strategy, operations, leadership, and capital structure.

  • Strategy: Businesses need more than tactical and operational fixes—they need a long-term vision. We work with management to create strategies aligned with the company’s strengths and market opportunities, such as entering new markets, expanding offerings, or cutting back to focus on the most profitable areas of the business.
  • Operations: Execution is critical. We have practical expertise in all areas of operational improvement ranging from supply chain & logistics through to sales optimisation.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership is vital. We help strengthen teams, redefine roles, and build capabilities through hiring or training, ensuring the business has the right resources to deliver the strategy.
  • Capital Structure: Our approach to leverage is conservative, always looking to see business are well capitalised with plenty of headroom.

Sustainable Value Creation & M&A

We focus on long-term value, not just short-term gains. Our strategies aim to deliver enduring improvements in operations, culture, and market position — ensuring businesses thrive beyond our investment.

We require the initial acquisition to be of a sufficient scale without the need for M&A. However, we are happy to consider acquisitions when it aligns with strategic goals. If it accelerates growth or enhances market position, we work with management to explore opportunities.

Empowering Management Teams

Strong, empowered management teams are key to investment success. Our approach is to partners with teams and:

  • Collaborate with management to understand challenges and align on vision
  • Have open and regular communication
  • Build trusted partnerships based on transparency and shared long-term goals
  • Provide constructive challenge and candid feedback
  • Add resources and operational expertise with hands-on support if necessary
  • Help teams to move from short-term fixes to lasting competitive advantage
